Claudio Monteverdi Vespers of 1610
For the climax of our 2023-4 season, and our final concert under the direction of our current Musical Director, Lee Dunleavy, we present arguably one of the finest and most thrilling, and definitely one of the earliest, pieces for a large choir, Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin .
Published in Venice in 1610, and poised on the cusp between High Renaissance and Early Baroque, this is a daring and highly original work, in which the composer pushed musical expression to new heights, both for singers and for instrumentalists. If you’ve heard it before, you’ll know what an unmissable experience this will be; if you haven’t, come and be blown away!
We will again be joined by the period instrument ensemble Charivari Agréable, who have partnered us in several highly successful concerts, the most recent being our sellout Bach
