Gioachino Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle

Rossini’s optimistic and effervescent “sin of old age”, written for performance in a Parisian salon, will be sung in the classical splendour of the Royal Pump Rooms.

The title was surely chosen with tongue firmly in cheek - the work is certainly not small, and whilst there are moments of deeply felt poignancy, the overall spirit of it is far from solemn. The composer himself commented “Have I just written sacred music, or rather, sacrilegious music?"
